PodCamp Boston
So, as I’m sitting here in a session, might as well talk about the event so far. Maybe later today I’ll record a short episode about PodCamp.
My session on Teen Podcasting, late Saturday afternoon (yes, it did happen!), was unbelievable. Some great people, including Ann Bernard from Pownce, showed up with great ideas on teens, podcasting, education, and (new)media. Forget the fact that it was a “session”, it seemed more like a group brainstorming session. Later, once I can get my thoughts together (that’s a sleep issue), I’ll be sure to write it up and put it up somewhere. As far as I know, there will be an audio recording of the session, but that won’t help too much because the session was highly participatory, and only I had a microphone. And, thanks to Dave LaMorte for giving my his session slot.
And, thank you Ann, Hugh, Derrick, Dave, Leslie, and everyone else, for coming to see the session. I had fun.
Currently, I’m in the “Is Podcasting a Revolution?” session in room 206b.
Canadians at Vimy Ridge
Listen to "Canadians at Vimy Ridge"The Battle of Vimy Ridge (April 1917) was a turning point in WWI. It was the first great allied victory. It also continues to be the greatest event in modern Canada's military history.
The 100,000 Canadians of the Canadian Corps were commanded by Arthur Currie. Currie began numerous preparations including:
- Giving maps to all Canadian troops, not just the officers
- Training all Canadian troops on a replica of Vimy Ridge
- Building an elaborate tunnel system underneath no man's land in order to carry men to the enemy front lines more quickly
- Use air support (including the famous Billy Bishop, a Canadian flying ace) to protect against German recon
Four Victoria Crosses were awarded in the battle. 3000 Canadians were KIA, and another 7000 were wounded. 20,000 Germans were wounded and 4000 were captured.

PodCamp Boston: Here’s What’s Going On
So, if you’ve been reading my blog, you know that there have been some “issues” with my session at PodCamp Boston. Well, those issues are almost gone, thankfully.
Here’s what happened. The PodCamp Boston “master schedule” was released, I noticed that my session was not present, so I wrote a blog post and contacted the PodCamp Boston crew, with a self-admittedly angry letter. You can read the original blog post here. There were a lot of quick emails and interactions, and currently, they’re looking for a session slot for me! Thank you Chris (Cofounder) and Whitney (organizer) for your quick responses and support. And, thank you all who contacted the PodCamp Boston team. It means a lot to me. This is why I love the Internet.
Here’s the original post.
Here’s the update (Must read).

PreviewCast #045: An Unlock a Day Helps the iBricks to Stay
Download MP3 Episode | Download iTunes Enhanced AAC Episode
The Apple iPhone-crazed world had their equivalent of a Pearl Harbor attack this week when the iPhone Software Update 1.1.1 bricked any unlocked iPhones and wiped out any non-unlock hacks that had been installed, and we spend a lot of time on this episode looking at the aftermath of said action. However, this packed episode represents only the third time that we’ve had a five-person show, and the first time that a show with that many people hasn’t literally fallen to pieces. We also briefly celebrate Douglas’ 16th birthday, although (as predicted), we don’t do any kind of singing. We also welcome on board brand new PreviewCaster David Lewis, who is a phpBB MOD Team member, co-hosts phpBB Weekly with Douglas, and is also an avid MacBook Pro user. Oh, and this episode is also the fifth longest we’ve ever done as well.
Apple only cut the iPhone’s price by $200, and even then offered $100 credit to all of those early iPhone adopters who whined so much. But that didn’t stop a Queens, New York resident from suing Apple for $1 million in damages resulting from Apple lowering the price. What next, will Apple be sued for the Nike+iPod Sport Kit? (EDITOR’S NOTE: Apparently as I was writing these notes, news broke that Apple indeed was sued over the Nike+iPod Sport Kit.) However, maybe Apple deserves a bit more grief, as Apple’s 1.1.1 Software Update did indeed brick iPhones that had been unlocked with other networks, which has sent the iPhone web in an uproar. And ironic that it happened only hours after David Pogue released his video on hot hacks for the iPhone. We talk about why Apple would brick these phones and why they wouldn’t listen to a little common sense. Google Earth gets a pretty cool Sky View, and Microsoft releases info on Office for Mac 2008, which looks a lot like a clunkier and more expensive ripoff of iWork ‘08. Douglas guest blogged an article on Caitlyn’s blog a week ago on why Microsoft should be worried about iWork. Then, after the Music Break, Douglas briefly mentions what he got for his birthday, and then all five of us reviews something, including Robert, who forces Douglas to post a 74 Larry-head rating, despite the fact that the Larry-heads are only supposed to be out of five! If you have a seizure or any other kind of bandwidth or health problems as a result of all of the Larry heads down on this post, it’s Robert’s fault.
Assuming that the 90 minute length doesn’t brick your mind, you should be sure to check out this great episode of PreviewCast!
